The Sandbox is an open-world metaverse game on Ethereum and Solana. You can create your own world, make a game, or just chat with strangers.

<p>The SANDchain Foundation is set to launch publicly on testnet this October. This new blockchain is designed to provide financial infrastructure for the global creator economy. <p>The Sandbox Web3 game is undergoing one of its biggest shakeups since its launch. Reports of mass layoffs, leadership changes, office closures, and even a pivot toward memecoin products surfaced on Aug. 27 and left many wondering if this would be the end of The Sandbox as we know it.</p><p>The story initially broke on Aug. 27, when crypto news outlet <a href="https://www.thebigwhale.io/">The Big Whale</a> reported that more than half of&nbsp;<a href="https://funjible.games/games/The-Sandbox">The Sandbox's</a> 250 employees were being laid off. The same report also mentioned that several international offices would shut down and co-founders Arthur Madrid and Sébastien Borget were being pushed out of executive positions.</p><p>The report also suggested that Animoca Brands, The Sandbox's parent company, was behind the restructuring, as Animoca's CEO of Investments, Robby Yung, has now also stepped in as The Sandbox's new CEO.</p><div class="raw-html-embed">

The game had allegedly burned through nearly $300 million over eight years but was now attracting only a few hundred daily users. These claims are difficult to verify, but the $SAND token losing more than 95 percent of its value since its 2021 all-time high doesn't do the game any favors.</p><p>However, Animoca Brands co-founder Yat Siu disputed the user activity figures in an <a href="https://x.com/Cointelegraph/status/1961068382746501601">interview with Cointelegraph</a>. Siu claimed that The Sandbox's last season attracted 250,000-300,000 users, with the majority of gameplay occurring off-chain, explaining why on-chain NFT trading shows the lower numbers reported.</p><h2>The Sandbox's Response</h2><p>The Sandbox quickly published an official statement on Aug. 28 due to growing speculations about its future. The game pushed back against the claims, calling them “inaccurate or out-of-context claims.”</p><p>The company confirmed the leadership changes and layoffs, but explained them as part of a broader operational optimization strategy.</p><ul><li>Leadership transition: Arthur Madrid is now chairman, while Sébastien Borget has become global ambassador.</li><li>Restructuring rationale: The company cited AI-driven efficiencies in game development and operational support as the reason behind a leaner workforce.</li><li>Office closures: Reports that "five to six offices" were being shut down were misleading, according to The Sandbox. Many of these locations were staffed by only a handful of contractors in co-working spaces.</li><li>Future direction: While outside reports suggested a pivot away from the metaverse toward a memecoin launchpad, The Sandbox insists it is not abandoning its core mission.</li></ul><p>According to Yat Siu, Animoca Brands has been the majority shareholder of The Sandbox since 2018.
